Dr. Simcha Epstein, the Center's director, has recently published a book on the "Dreyfusards" under the Occupation (in French). The book describes the political evolution of a number of French intellectuals -- former supporters of Dreyfus during his trial -- who took pro-Nazi and antisemitic attitudes in the 1930s and 1940s. The book received positive reviews, and sparked an energetic debate in the French media.

The Center Desmarais for the Research of the French Culture, The Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, is organizing a special evening at the Maiersdorf
Faculty Club, room 503, Mount Scopus Campus, on May 17th, 2001, at 19.30
hrs.
The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Renee Poznanski from the Ben Gurion
University, Beer-Sheva, with the participation of Prof. Claude Klein, Hebrew
University and the author.
Dr. Petr Vasicek and Dr. Mario
U. Morini released a memorandum addressed to Czech president Vaclav Havel
and Austrian president Klestil asking for a symbolic gesture of rehabilitation
for Leopold Hilsner, condemned in 1899 for ritual murder in the Polna Trial.
Dr. Vasicek has been involved
in the clarification of this affair and in the rehabilitation of Hilsner
and the Jewish community of Polna.
In May 2000, Dr. Vasicek gave a
lecture
on this topic at the research seminar of our Center.
